Words are picked with crypto.getRandomValues from the EFF large wordlist (CC BY 3.0 US), bundled into this page. Nothing is fetched or sent.

How it works

A diceware passphrase is a string of random words, like sleek-cactus-pregame-unwind-ladle-brick. Each word comes from a list of 7,776, so each one adds log2(7776), about 12.9 bits of entropy. Six words reach 77.5 bits.

The strength comes from the random pick, not from the words being obscure. That is why you must not choose or rearrange the words yourself: human choices are predictable. This generator selects each word with crypto.getRandomValues and rejection sampling, so every word in the list is exactly as likely as every other.

Options and what they cost

  • Separators and capitals help some sites accept the passphrase. They add little strength, so the meter ignores them.
  • The digit option adds a small amount (about 5 bits for six words) and exists for sites that demand a number.
  • Show dice rolls lists the five-dice code for each word. If you prefer, roll real dice and look the words up yourself.

Use a passphrase for the handful of secrets you have to remember. Everything else can be a long random password stored in a password manager or a locked note.

Questions

Six words from the EFF large wordlist gives about 77.5 bits of entropy, which is the common recommendation for a master password. Five words (about 64.6 bits) is fine for everyday accounts with rate-limited logins. Use seven or more for anything that protects encrypted files.

Diceware is a method for building passphrases by rolling five dice per word and looking the result up in a list of 7,776 words. Because every word is picked by chance, the strength is easy to calculate: 12.9 bits per word. This tool does the same pick with a cryptographic random number generator and can show the matching dice rolls.

At the same entropy they are equally hard to crack. A passphrase is easier to remember and type, which matters for the few passwords you cannot store in a manager, like your device login or password manager master password.

The EFF large wordlist was designed for diceware: 7,776 common English words, no offensive or easily confused words, and none that are prefixes of each other. It is bundled into this page, so no list is downloaded when you generate.
